If you are a guy, it doesn't take reading a ton of market research or conducting your own polls to tell you that entertainment options for men are often few and far between.
Turn on network TV in the morning and afternoon and you will largely find soap operas or infomercials. Go to the magazine rack of a chain book store and you will find women's magazines easily outnumber men's publications.
Even the average expo or trade and craft show tends to skew toward the feminine demographic here in Hawaii. Sure there's a car show or two every year but bridal, fashion shows and other female-oriented fare tend to dominate.
That's why last February's Hawaii's Big Boy's Show-also known as the Big Toys for Big Boys Expo-at Neil Blaisdell Center's Exhibition Hall was a unique event.
For the first time in the islands, an array of entertainment, exhibits and vendors were concentrated under one roof-just for guys.
To be fair, a number of women-along with their husband and boyfriends- attended the event which lasted for three days during last year's Pro Bowl weekend.
But the show was definitely testosterone city, eye-candy for men and we're not just talking about the Bikini and Lingerie contests featuring shapely ladies in eye-catching outfits that drew large audiences. Custom motorcycles and high-octane cars were on display for auto aficionados to gawk at and a hold-em poker tournament drew players and onlookers.
This month, the Hawaii Big Boy's Show returns to Blaisdell's Exhibition Hall running from Friday, March 28-Sunday, March 30 and promises more adult toys for grown-up boys to admire.
Jas Pascua, one of the organizers of the Big Boys Show, told Kane Magazine that the seeds of the event began more than a year ago when Pascua came up with an idea for starting an expo while talking with friends and colleagues at an informal business meeting.
"It kind of first started with a franchise expo like a business expo" stated Pascua "but we decided to do an all guys event."
Pascua's initial concept was to create a small business expo with franchises and vendors available to network and interact with attendees with an eye on starting new businesses.
However, Pascua's business partner and Big Boy's Show's main organizer Harry Alonzo convinced him to change to focus of the expo away from small businesses and toward the interests and desires of men.
"There's not a lot of shows for guys" Pascua noted about local expose and shows "There's a lot of women's shows but not much for guys."
While admitting that there are local car shows, Pascua observes that those shows are "geared toward a certain demographic" namely car enthusiasts while the Big Boy's Show aims for a "broader" audience that is "all ages:guys, gals, children also."
What was Pascua's response to his partner's idea? "Let's do it" he said.
Thus, the Hawaii Big Boys Show was born.
Pascua defines the Big Boys Show a expo that is geared toward "what guys like to see and buy" namely "fast cars, custom motorcycles, surfing products" along with "sporting goods, gadgets, electronics."
Last year's inaugural event drew 6,000 paying visitors and featured 100 automobiles on display, Bikini and lingerie contests and a Hold-em Poker Tournament that-according to surveys and attendee audience response-turned out to be one of the most popular attractions at the Big Boy's Show.
This year, Pascua hopes that 10,000 paying attendees will come and enjoy themselves at the Big Boy's Show.
The 2008 edition of the Big Boy's Show promises to be "bigger and badder" with another Poker Tournament planned as well as a Hooter's Bikini contest, a lingerie-clad Burlesque band,a paintball shooting range, a mini-NASCAR racetrack, an ASEC arena complete with a skate ramp and a beer garden.
This year's show will also feature contests including the chance for attendees to win a Honda Jet Ski and a GMC Canyon Truck.
In addition, the amount of exhibitors and vendors presenting products and wares- ranging from clothing to electronics- at this year's show will be doubled.
Companies and participating sponsors include Budweiser, ASEC, Volcom, and Quicksilver.
Why should guys attend the Hawaii Big Boy's Show on March 28, 29, and 30?
"You have everything that a guy wants under one roof" stated Pascua later adding that the Big Boy's Show is "an avenue where guys can let loose and just enjoy themselves."
In short, the Hawaii Big Boy's Show has "everything a guy can want."
